I, personally, did not have the pleasure of knowing Walter outside of work. As many of you, I did have the distinct pleasure of knowing him on the show floor. He was a wonderful man with stellar work ethics and one who worked tirelessly on any task given. He always had a smile on his face whether he was just beginning a job or completing the day. Walter was a true man's man.
Walter's character and heart can be seen in his son, Timothy, currently an "Apprentice Journeyman" with Local 831. Timothy's virtues as a young gentleman were infused in him by Walter, as Walter passed on his own skills and abilities, attributes, personality, passion and love not only for his family, but also for his work. This is a reflection and direct result of the amazing person Walter was.
When my father passed away not too long ago, I remember having a conversation with Timothy on the Anaheim Convention Center floor in the back of Hall B, near the freight door. Timothy took the time to go out of his way, to come and give me his condolences. He did not know what to say, but who does at times like these? He was instilled with insight from his father as his words gave me comfort and made feel better. At the time, Timothy mentioned he couldn't even imagine what I was going through.
I told him then, as I will share with him now, that he will get through it, it will be hard. He will be strong, because his father wouldn't have had it any other way. I know, because my Dad wouldn't have it any other way either. Our fathers were a lot alike in so many facets. Timothy did not have the good fortune to meet or know my father. However, I was blessed in that it was my pleasure to have been graced with not only knowing his, but working with him.
That previous conversation was a lot easier for me to have with Timothy, than the one I just had earlier today. Even as I write this, I am devastated at the loss of such a wonderful man. Walter was a true treasure to work with and will be truly missed.
As for me personally, how could I ever forget him? His gentleness, sincerity, and his demeanor never tarnished. His personality was larger than life and was evidenced by a sense of humor, which was shared only by those closest to him. All of these traits, just begin to sum up the quality of the man we should all strive to duplicate. Walter was indeed a great man.
I take solace in knowing Walter Young will always be - "On Location" with us, in our hearts, our dreams, our thoughts and most of all, our prayers.
With much love, respect and sympathy,
